Meeting World Champion Ben Wildman-Tobriner at Rinconada Pool
On Saturday, October 13, PASA hosted a clinic with World Champion sprinter Ben Wildman-Tobriner at Rinconada Park. Ben shared his stories and advice with swimmers from both Coach Ben and Coach Ricky's groups. He also did some in-water demonstrations of starts and turns, as well as provided instruction to the kids. There was also a lengthy question and answer period and autograph-signing. Ben also brought two of his FINA World Championship gold medals, one each from Montreal 2005 and Melbourne 2007. It was a fun clinic on a beautiful day at the pool, and we hope to bring other great events like it to PASA!
Ben Wildman-Tobriner graduated from Stanford University in June 2007 and is a 20-time All-American as well as an Academic All-American. In March 2007, at the NCAA Championships, Ben broke the long-standing American Record in the 50y Free, earning the distinction of being the only American man to break the 19-second barrier (18.87). Later that month, he followed that up with a victory in the 50m Free at the FINA World Championships in Melbourne, Australia. He is also a two-time National Champion in the 50m Free and is currently the #3-ranked 100m Butterfly swimmer in the country. You can vote for Ben as "Breakthrough Performer" for USA Swimming's Golden Goggles at www.goldengoggles.com

PASA Changes its Approach to Recruiting Stroke and Turn Officials

PASA Membership Conduct
September 12, 2007
If a swimmer or parent from another team approaches you about joining PASA, it is important that you know....
Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics, now entering our fifth year, has experienced a great deal of growth and prosperity since our inception. In that time frame we have achieved a great deal in the competition pool and with that, drawn more attention to how that success has been achieved. We are not only judged by our swimmers performance in and out of the water, but also by how our parents and coaches conduct themselves on the pool deck.
With growing interest in our program, good swimmers from other clubs consider joining PASA. This leads to the question "What, if anything, is appropriate to say to swimmers or parents of swimmers from other teams?" As a parent, the answer is simple- refer the person in question to your coach. It is the coach’s job to make sure that the prospective swimmer talks to his or her club coach first. Then our coach will follow up with a personal conversation with the prospective swimmer’s coach. This puts the entire situation up front and keeps all parties well informed. Changes in swimming are inevitable, but the courtesy shown during this change is paramount.
Remember, that at competitions, not only are the performances of our swimmers being judged, but the conduct of parents as well. At the end of the day, you must ask yourself "Is what I’m doing a positive reflection on PASA?" We will continue to try and improve as a program both in and out of the water and your cooperation is very much appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your help and we look forward to many more years of success!
Sincerely,
Site Directors of PASA
Dave Zapp- Foothills
Paula Provoznik- Fremont Hills
Israel Rangel- Pacific Athletic Club
Mark Taliaferro- University Club
Bruce Smith- Alpine
Scott Shea- SCRA
